The Office of Local History was established in 1960 to provide a more systematic program of assistance to a growing number of affiliates. Administratively the office reported first to the director of the Historical Society, then was moved to the Museum Division (WIHV86-A2049) in 1968, to the Division of Development and State Relations in 1979, and to the Division of Public History (WIHV97-A89) in 1996. The State Historical Society was founded in 1846, chartered in 1853, and became a trustee of the state in 1855. Chapter 75, Laws of 1967, continued the Society as an independent agency. The Society is charged by statute with the collection, preservation, and dissemination of historical and cultural resources relating to Wisconsin, the Midwest, and the nation.
